In the distance the sun sets behind Lookout Mountain, about 20 miles away. I couldn’t help pull over and take this picture.

Below us in the foreground was the Tennessee River. The picture was taken from DuPont Parkway.

One thought that crossed my mind as I looked at the picture was of the men who fought and died there in 1863. For some the sunset on November 24th meant a lost cause. For others it meant the end of a battle thought impossible to win. To each a beautiful sunset must have brought radically different emotions.
