The Hermitage

This is a picture of the front of President Andrew Jackson’s house, The Hermitage, in Nashville, TN.

This house (mansion) was built back in the days when Tennessee was the American western frontier. Not exactly a log cabin, huh?

One thing that totally impressed me was that back in Jackson’s day anyone could just walk up to the front door and be invited in. Complete strangers were welcome to come visit. Can you imagine any of today’s leaders being that accessible? There are even two rooms upstairs that were meant for traveling guests. Guests could stay as long as needed until they were ready to travel.

One might wonder what would have happened, though, if a bad guy showed up, right? Well, keep this in mind: Andrew Jackson had a thing for duels, carried a sword he knew how to use, and was nick-named “Old Hickory.” He didn’t need the Secret Service. I’d say he would have enjoyed the entertainment.
